A classic Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cream.
1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until well blended. Whisk in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture boils. Boil gently for 1 minute, then remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Cover tightly and chill in refrigerator for 1 hour.
2. In a medium bowl, beat heavy cream and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
3. Remove the egg yolk mixture from the refrigerator. Add mascarpone cheese and whisk until smooth.
4. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until just combined.
5. In a shallow dish, combine the cooled coffee and coffee liqueur.
6. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture (don't soak them or they'll fall apart), and arrange a single layer in the bottom of a 9x13 inch dish.
7. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
8. Repeat with another layer of coffee-dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.
9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight.
10. Just before serving, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.
11. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
