1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
3. In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer until creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
4. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
6. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts (if using) by hand.
7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
8. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until golden brown around the edges but still soft in the center.
9. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
10. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
